Art Appreciation - Juniorate, Aug 2019
by Learoy Rodrigues SJ
An Art Appreciation workshop was conducted by Frs Wendell D'Cruz SJ and Vijay Gonsalves SJ for the 21 Juniors at Vinayalaya. This was a 4-day programme. The aim of this workshop is generally two-fold. Firstly, it aims at raising the brothers' awareness about the history of art, artists, periods in art, forms of art (especially painting and sculpture), socio-cultural-political situations that occasioned various forms of art, etc. The second objective is to help the brothers dip into art as a medium of self expression and as a way to understand one's affects, attitudes, inner movements, inclinations, woundedness, and lots else. The juniors found this to be an extremely enlightening exercise. The method followed included presentations, personal study, documentary-viewing, and actual hands on painting.
The Juniorate in Mumbai this year trains 21 Juniors from 8 different provinces in the Assistancy. They are housed in Vinayalaya, the mother house of the Bombay Jesuits. The Juniorate is a year of training in the humanities - arts, language, culture, communication skills, history, music, drama and lots else. Needless to say, this is an exciting year of Jesuit formation. You are welcome to contact us, know more about us, and join us in our work.
